PRP for Lip Injections: The Benefits of Platelet-Rich Plasma
Lip injections are a popular way to refresh and rejuvenate lips. However, many people are hesitant to undergo this procedure because of the fear of pain and possible side effects.
Fillers and botulinum toxins are a popular way to help achieve the perfect pout using non-invasive treatments.
But what about patients who also want to address any fine lines around their lips?
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) can be an effective treatment when used alone or in conjunction with cosmetic injectables.
Use it to help regenerate the skin’s surface from the inside out, promoting the growth of stem cells and the synthesis of collagen or elastin around the lips to help diminish wrinkles and fine lines over time and to give the lips a more youthful appearance.

What is PRP?
PRP is a relatively recent procedure for aesthetic rejuvenation. When we examine the etiology of volume loss with age, we can see that differential mass is gradually lost.
Lip and perioral aging is clinically manifested in the lips as finely defined lines around the lips in zone A (smoker lines) and loss of vascularity and volume in the prolabium in zone B.
PRP is a potent treatment that works from the inside out to rejuvenate the skin’s surface. By obtaining mending growth ingredients from your own blood and injecting them under the skin, a vigorous process of skin regeneration is initiated in and around the mouth.
As a result, the number of stem cells increases. Collagen and elastin production is boosted. The blood circulation has improved. With time, wrinkles and fine lines fade. The texture of the skin is restored, making it more equal and smooth. Lips look to be more youthful.
Performing PRP for Lip Injections
The patient should expect to receive two treatments, four weeks apart, of PRP injections.
As with any PRP treatment, you will first need to draw a sample of blood from your patient and separate out their plasma using a centrifuge.
The lip area should be chosen for rejuvenation using the Gordon Classification Methods (It is actually marking the lip and its division into six marked areas where injection can be easy).
Administer the injections equally to the lips to increase collagen formation.

Patient Post Care
- For the next 24 hours, the patient should stay away from alcohol, caffeine, hot drinks, and spicy foods, as they might worsen bruising and swelling.
- For 1-2 weeks, avoid supplements like multivitamins, fish oils, glucosamine, and Vitamin B or Vitamin E, which are blood thinners and can make bruising worse (in case these medicines are prescribed by your doctor then please contact your doctor before stopping these medicines).
- For the next 24 hours, should avoid excessive sun exposure or usage of a solarium.
- Apply ice to the injected region as needed for up to 6 hours following the treatment. This can assist in avoiding or relieving bruising. It can also aid in the reduction of edema.
- Don’t apply any makeup, swim, sit in the sauna, and drink very cold or hot things.
- Don’t go through any other treatment like laser therapy at least for 1 month.
Contraindications and Concerns
- You can notice redness, swelling, and discomfort in the treated regions for the first 24–48 hours after treatment. These reactions are normal and will go away on their own in the next 2-4 days. Bruising at the injection site is also frequent, and it usually goes away in 1-10 days.
- Swelling can cause an appearance of ‘unevenness’ in the treated area, which can be corrected in 1-2 days.
- Infection and pain at injection sites are also risks, if these risks persist then contact the center or your doctor.

Benefits of using PRP for Lip Injections:
- Very low risk of side effects as compared to fillers. Because the treatment uses a patient’s own blood, there is no chance of an allergic reaction
- Long term results because it stimulates cell growth
- Works well on it’s own or in combination with a filler like Juvederm™
- A great option for patients who may not need filler, but want a more natural and youthful look around their lips
Conclusion
PRP is an effective, safe, and minimally-invasive treatment for lip enhancement and rejuvenation. It can be used as a standalone treatment or in combination with fillers to achieve optimal results.
