Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

IAPAM offers two primary certifications: Certified Aesthetic Provider™ (CAP) for aesthetic procedures like Botox and dermal fillers, facial rejuvenation treatments and more; and Certified Medical Weight Management Provider™ (CWMP) for medically-supervised weight loss programs including comprehensive training in GLP-1 inhibitors/semaglutide/tirzepatide. For providers who want to take a smaller step, the IAPAM also offers a Cosmetic Injector Certification.

Our certification programs are open to licensed healthcare providers, including physicians, nurse practitioners (and CRNA/APRN), physician assistants, dentists and other qualified medical practitioners who want to expand their services in aesthetic medicine and medical weight management.

Please check with your local governing board to confirm you are working within your scope of practice prior to registering for training.

IAPAM offers both online and in-person training options. Online courses are self-paced and presented as a combination of readings, videos and other downloadable training content. Some online courses and training bundles may be eligible to be credited toward in-person tuition for hands-on training. In-person sessions are conducted in real medical settings, such as medical spas and dermatology practices, where you’ll receive practical, hands-on experience.

Certification completion times vary by program and individual pace. On average, each online course within your chosen certification takes between 8-10 hours to complete. Hands-on training is conducted at the Aesthetic Medicine Symposium with 2, 3 or 4-day training packages available. Once training is complete, certification is granted after a final assessment.

For the Certified Aesthetic Provider (CAP) hands-on training is highly recommended to ensure safe, effective practice. Online modules provide a strong foundation, but in-person training offers practical application and expert guidance. In addition, the CAP program requires that you submit an Aesthetic Provider Practice Log each year to achieve and maintain certification.

Absolutely! IAPAM offers ongoing support, including practice management resources, access to ongoing education, and staff training materials. As a member, you’ll also join a network of professionals dedicated to excellence in aesthetic medicine and medical weight management. Membership is included with your certification and ongoing support is available for all certified members who maintain their training and certification.

IAPAM’s business training provides essential insights into managing a profitable practice, covering topics like patient acquisition, pricing, marketing, and legal considerations. We help you transform clinical skills into revenue-generating services that attract and retain patients.

While each certification covers a full scope of skills and knowledge, certain courses may be available individually. Contact us for specific options if you’re interested in a particular area of training.

How to Choose the Right Medical Weight Management Certification

When it comes to choosing a medically-supervised weight loss training program or certification, it can be difficult to know where to start.

There are so many different programs available, and not all of them work.

How do you know what to look for in a weight loss training program and what to stay away from?

In this blog post, we will discuss the key factors you should consider when making your decision.

Medical weight management certification

6 Factors to Consider When Choosing Your Medical Weight Management Certification

  1. The first thing you should consider is your goals. What are you looking to achieve with your medical weight loss program?
Do you want to help your patients reach their weight loss goals? Are you looking for another way to increase your practice revenues?
  2. You will also want to consider how much support you’ll need to implement your new program.
Some practices have great staff resources in place to create their own program and roll out great marketing materials to attract patients. Others do not.
  3. You should also look into who is offering the medical weight management training and certification.
Sometimes it’s just one protocol (or a new “diet plan” where all they changed was a small ingredient to a supplement they’re trying to sell you).
  4. Another important factor to consider is the program’s adherence and sustainability. Will your patients be able to stick with the program?
Is it something they can realistically maintain for the long term?
  5. The program should also be evidence-based. What research is there to support its use? Is the program backed by scientific studies?
  6. And finally, consider the cost of the training and certification.

Once you have a better understanding of what you hope to achieve, you can start narrowing down your options.
