Botox® has been used worldwide for years to medically treat a number of muscular conditions, and cosmetically to remove wrinkles by temporarily blocking nerve activity in the muscles.
It is made from a neurotoxin called Botulinum which is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.
Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA) is also used for cosmetic purposes and to treat moderate wrinkles.
It works as a great substitute for Botox® and is made from the same neurotoxin, therefore functioning in a similar manner.
Produced by Merz Pharmaceuticals, Xeomin® is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with the conclusion that it is a safe and effective alternative to Botox®.
It has now been approved for several cosmetic purposes.
Given that Xeomin® is now readily available and FDA approved, it can be used both on-label and off-label by doctors for the treatment of facial lines and wrinkles treated by Botox®- including frown lines, crow’s feet and wrinkles on the forehead.
If a patient has frown or forehead lines, smile lines around their eyes, crow’s feet or all of the aforementioned, receiving Xeomin® injections can help make them look less tired and more relaxed.
Notable results vary depending on the area treated and often vary from person to person.
With Xeomin®, patients can expect the wrinkles on their forehead and around their eyes to become smoother, brows to be lifted and eyelids to appear more open.
This, in turn, would make the overall facial expression seem to exude more relaxation and alertness- giving users results similar to Botox®.
The two products are similar, but professionals remain undecided about which one is the better alternative for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles for several reasons.
Xeomin® is the first product of its kind that does not need to be refrigerated before use, which makes its distribution and preservation much easier.
The effects of Xeomin® begin to show within a week, with the results lasting for a period ranging from three to six months, making it comparable to its counterpart in terms of duration of action.
The human body, in an act of self-protection, develops antibodies in response to a foreign invader and attacks.
Theoretically, antibodies could prevent a neurotoxin from having its desired effects by simply destroying it.
Xeomin® also has no additives as Botox® does- it only consists of botulinum toxin type A.
This in turn considerably decreases the risk of one’s body to develop antibodies against Xeomin® than other available neurotoxins.
If a patient has received Botox® and seemed to be dissatisfied with the results, their body may respond better to Xeomin®.
Pregnant patients must avoid Xeomin® injections.
Similarly, people that have any neurological disease, history of temporary paralysis, loss of vision, or double vision, should not receive Xeomin® injections.
With these disorders, there may be an increased risk of complications and using this product could even worsen an underlying disorder.
Xeomin® must not be used interchangeably with other botulinum products.
Using Xeomin® in a larger amount and more often than what is prescribed will not make it more effective and can result in serious side effects.
In the case where one is allergic to botulinum toxin they should completely avoid receiving Xeomin®.
Botulinum toxin could potentially spread to other areas of the body beyond where it was injected, possibly causing serious life-threatening side effects.
Therefore, after treatment, patients are advised to avoid laying back or falling asleep because the injected Xeomin® may spread to nearby areas causing unwanted and unpleasant relaxation of other muscles.
The Xeomin®-injected area may appear to be like a mosquito bite for up to an hour after and may remain swollen for a few hours.
The skin may display redness around the affected area, a symptom that is likely to last only a few days.
After treatment, patients are likely to experience bruising.
To prevent and minimize bruising after treatment, patients should avoid products containing aspirin or high-dose vitamin E supplements for up to ten days prior to the procedure.
If bruising occurs, it may require around 7 to 10 days for it to clear up.
Patients can apply makeup immediately after treatment which means they can easily conceal possible bruises.
Health professionals should recommend their patients exercise the facial muscles several times for a few hours after the injections in order to speed up Xeomin® absorption.
This can be done by frowning, raising the eyebrows, smiling, and squinting.
Over the years, Xeomin® has become increasingly popular, especially since it has often proven more effective on people that do not get desired results from Botox®.
With cosmetic procedures becoming more and more common, it seems that a larger number of healthcare professionals will turn to Xeomin® given its similarity to Botox® and the fact that it requires no prior refrigeration before administration.
Time will allow professionals to understand and observe the notable differences between this product and its counterpart.
It is not difficult to predict, however, that Xeomin® is soon going to be well adopted by professionals all over the world.
Botox® injections have become the ‘go-to’ solution when it comes to getting rid of facial lines and wrinkles and improving one’s appearance.
Younger looking skin is no longer unattainable, and just a few injections once in a while can help achieve this in no time. Botox® injections are also extremely affordable, and the effects can be seen almost immediately.

But, what are the Botox® alternatives, and are they as good?

The principle behind the surgiwire procedure is simple. Lines and furrows are believed to be due to attachment of skin to deeper structures.
Releasing these attachments through the surgiwire technique loosens up the skin and gets rid of furrows and lines.
Similarly, furrows can be produced by muscle groups below the skin.
Releasing these muscles through surgical incision can help get rid of them, producing an effect that is similar to Botox®.
GFX is a radiofrequency treatment that targets the muscles responsible for the contraction of the glabella.
It relaxes the muscles by stimulating the nerves and helps reduce lines and furrows in the forehead. The effects tend to last 1 to 2 years.
Dermal fillers such as Juvederm and hyaluronic acid are safe and effective alternatives to botox when getting rid of lines and wrinkles.
They are simple to perform and help smoothen out skin with just a few treatments. They are also useful in managing facial scars.
The advantage they bear is that they are natural products that occur in the skin anyway, making the chances of developing any reactions to them slim.
It is questionable if there are any suitable alternatives to Botox®.
A quick review of medical forums reveals that most practicing professionals do not believe that anything can come close to the effects that Botox® brings following treatments.
Creams and moisturizers claim to provide these benefits, but not many believe that they come close to the effects Botox® has on wrinkles and lines.
Patients’ opinions may vary of course, but it appears that in those patients who do not wish to have Botox®, there are alternatives that can bring similar effects to the skin.
