Daxxify® vs. Botox®

In the world of non-invasive treatments, Botox® has been the go-to choice for many years and is well-known for helping smooth out wrinkles without surgery. Now, Daxxify® is stepping onto the scene as an exciting new option, with promises of unique benefits and longer-lasting effects. In this article, we’ll compare Daxxify® and Botox® to help you understand their differences, how well they work, their safety, and what people think of them.

What is Daxxify®?

Daxxify®, also known as Daxi, is a product developed by Revance Therapeutics Inc., a company based in Newark, California. Like Botox®, Daxxify® helps to smooth out wrinkles by using tiny injections of a substance called botulinum toxin. These treatments target dynamic wrinkles, which are the lines that appear from repeated muscle movements, like smiling or frowning.

What sets Daxxify® apart is its use of a unique peptide technology, which may contribute to its longer-lasting effects compared to Botox®. Clinical studies have suggested that the effects of Daxxify® can last about six months on average, which is roughly two months longer than the typical duration of Botox®.

Daxxify® has been approved by the FDA to specifically treat glabellar lines, commonly known as frown lines. These are the vertical lines that show up between your eyebrows and can make you look older. By injecting Daxxify® into these areas, the muscles causing the lines relax, resulting in a more youthful and natural appearance.

In summary, Daxxify® is a long-lasting, FDA-approved treatment for frown lines, offering a new option for those seeking a youthful appearance with fewer treatments.

How Does Daxxify® Work to Treat Wrinkles?

Daxxify® is a type of injectable treatment known as a neuromodulator, which helps smooth out dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles develop from repeated muscle movements, like those that occur when you smile, frown, or squint. For instance, smiling can cause lines around the mouth and crow’s feet near the eyes, while frowning or raising your eyebrows can lead to forehead lines and frown lines between the eyebrows.

Daxxify® works by injecting a small amount of botulinum toxin, specifically daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm, into the muscles responsible for these wrinkles. This substance blocks the nerve signals that tell the muscles to contract. This means the muscles stay relaxed, which smooths out the wrinkles and helps prevent new ones from forming.

The effects of Daxxify® can last for up to six months, which is longer than other similar treatments available on the market. This makes Daxxify® a long-lasting option for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and achieving a more youthful look.

Daxxify® vs. Botox®: What are the Similarities and Differences?

Similarities:

1. Mechanism of Action:
Both Daxxify® (daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm) and Botox® (onabotulinumtoxinA) are neuromodulators. They work by blocking nerve signals that cause muscle contractions, resulting in the smoothing of dynamic wrinkles.

2. FDA Approval for Glabellar Lines:
Both Daxxify® and Botox® are FDA-approved for the treatment of glabellar lines, the vertical lines that appear between the eyebrows.

Differences:

1. Additional FDA Approvals (Botox®):
Botox® is FDA-approved for a wider range of both cosmetic and medical conditions, including forehead lines, crow’s feet, upper limb spasticity, cervical dystonia, excessive sweating, and overactive bladder. Daxxify® is currently only FDA-approved for treating glabellar lines.

2. Off-Label Uses:
While Daxxify® may be used off-label for conditions similar to those treated by Botox®, it has not been FDA-approved for those uses.

3. Composition:
Botox® uses human serum albumin in its formulation, whereas Daxxify® uses a synthetic, proprietary Peptide Exchange Technology. Daxxify® does not contain human or animal-derived products.

4. Duration of Effects:
Botox® typically lasts for 3-4 months, while Daxxify®’s effects can last for up to 6 months, which is believed to be due to its unique formulation.

Length of Time on Market and Consumer Confidence:

Botox® has a long history of safe and effective use in both medical and cosmetic fields. Approved by the FDA in 1989 for medical use and in 2002 for cosmetic purposes, Botox® has become one of the most extensively researched and widely used treatments for reducing facial wrinkles.

Millions of treatments are performed globally each year with a well-documented safety profile. Adverse effects are rare and typically minor, such as slight bruising or temporary drooping of eyelids. The long-term track record of Botox® offers a high level of confidence for both practitioners and patients, making it a trusted option for those looking to achieve a smoother and more youthful appearance.

Daxxify® was approved by the FDA in 2022, making it a newcomer to the market. Despite being newer, the longer-lasting results of Daxxify® have allowed it to quickly gain market share.

Cost:

On a per-unit basis, Daxxify® generally costs more than Botox®. However, because Daxxify® provides longer-lasting results, patients may ultimately require fewer treatments per year. This could make Daxxify® a more cost-effective option over the long-term, reducing the frequency of maintenance treatments and potentially lowering overall costs.

Does Daxxify® Have Any Side Effects?

Clinical trials demonstrated that Daxxify® is generally well-tolerated, but like any injectable treatment, it can have side effects. Common side effects associated with Daxxify® include:

Injection Site Reactions: Patients may experience redness, swelling, bruising, or mild discomfort at the injection site. These side effects are typically mild and resolve on their own within a few days to up to a week after treatment.

To minimize the risk of bruising, it is often recommended to avoid taking blood thinners, such as aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), before treatment. Patients should discuss any medications they are taking with their healthcare provider before undergoing treatment.

Uncommon Side Effects:

Headache: Clinical trials reported that about 6% of patients experienced headaches following Daxxify® treatment.

Eyelid Ptosis (Drooping Eyelid): Approximately 2% of patients experienced eyelid ptosis, which is a temporary drooping of the eyelid.

While Daxxify® does not have significant safety concerns, it is important for patients to consult with their healthcare provider to discuss their medical history and any potential risks before treatment. This ensures a personalized approach to minimize side effects and achieve the best possible outcomes.

Botox® vs. Daxxify®: Conclusion

After examining the key aspects of Daxxify® and Botox®, it’s clear that both neuromodulators offer potent solutions for reducing wrinkles and achieving a more youthful appearance.

Botox® has solidified its reputation with decades of proven safety and effectiveness, making it a reliable choice for many seeking non-surgical cosmetic improvements. On the other hand, Daxxify® brings exciting new advancements with its unique peptide technology and potentially longer-lasting results. Ultimately, the choice between Daxxify® and Botox® will depend on individual preferences, treatment goals, and consultation with a qualified healthcare provider.
