How long after Botox® will I see results?

Botox® injections usually start working one to three days after treatment. It can depend on a variety of things:
  • The area being treated
  • The volume of the injection
  • Your physical activity after treatment

Can you see Botox® results in 24 hours?

This study found that when Botox® is used as a treatment for lines and wrinkles, the onset of efficacy is typically rapid.

“The percentage of responders at maximum frown 2–4 days after treatment was 95.2% and 85.0% when responders were defined as patients with ≥1-point and ≥2-point improvement on the 5-point scale compared with baseline, respectively. At this time point, 84% of the maximum effect had occurred.

In other words, you may start to see results in as little as 24 hours, although the average time is three days. However, some patients may not see results for as long as five days.

How long does it take for Botox® to take effect?

As a neuromodulator that relaxes muscles and keeps them from working at their full capacity, thereby reducing the wrinkles they cause, Botox® usually begins to take effect anywhere from 3 to 5 days after treatment, though it can take up to a full 14 days after treatment for the full results to become apparent. One of the reasons for this delay is due to the time it takes for the body to start reacting to the Botox® after it’s been injected.

How long does it take Botox® to fully work? When does Botox® peak?

Maximum results from Botox® treatment are not immediate. It does take some time to fully work. So when does Botox® kick in? Most patients will see results within 10 to 14 days but should wait the full 14 days to see the maximum results.

Why does Botox® take so long to work?

Botox® is administered by injection under the skin, where it is absorbed (over time) by nerve cells in contact with the muscle. In a nutshell, it takes time for Botox® to take effect on the muscle and stop or weaken the muscle contraction that causes the lines and wrinkles to appear on the surface of the skin. Once those muscles stop contracting, the lines or wrinkles release, resulting in an improved appearance of the skin. There are a number of reasons that this timing varies from patient to patient:
  • Area of treatment
  • Muscle thickness
  • The volume of Botox used

On average, it can take Botox® 4-7 days to start showing results on 11 lines as the neurotoxin gets into the right places to block signals from the nerves to the muscles.

But seriously, why does Botox® take 2 weeks to work?

It can be frustrating when patients don’t understand the science behind Botox® injections and continue to wonder why Botox® doesn’t work immediately. The science tells us that Botox® binds at a connection point between muscles and nerves called the motor end plate. Botox® releases an enzyme that prevents muscle contraction. This enzyme binds to specific sites on proteins called SNAREs, which form a complex in the synapse between nerve and muscle cells. Although Botox® binds quickly, this entire process takes several days.

Conclusion: How long does it take for Botox® to take effect?

When Botox® is injected correctly by a medical professional, you can expect noticeable results after your first treatment.

It typically takes two to four days for the muscle to begin weakening, reducing movement in the treated area.

Maximum results usually appear between ten and fourteen days post-treatment, when the full effects of the Botox® become visible.
