The CDC identified more than 110,000 suspected cases between 2010 and 2022 and estimates that up to 450,000 Americans may be affected, and it notes that some people with the syndrome also react to gelatin and other products made from mammals.

For a supplement shelf, that matters: bovine and porcine collagen and gelatin, including gelatin capsules, are mammal-derived. Anyone with alpha-gal syndrome, or with unexplained delayed reactions after red meat, should treat beef- and pork-sourced collagen as a potential trigger and discuss alternatives with their allergist.

Is there such a thing as hypoallergenic collagen?

Not exactly, and one common claim needs correcting. Egg membrane collagen is often described as a hypoallergenic alternative, but it is egg-derived, which makes it the wrong choice for anyone with an egg allergy. Biotin can distort your lab results

Biotin is commonly added to collagen products sold for hair, skin, and nails, often at doses many times the dietary requirement. The FDA has issued repeated safety communications warning that biotin interferes with a wide range of immunoassay laboratory tests and can cause falsely low troponin results, the test used to diagnose a heart attack. Thyroid and hormone tests can be affected as well.

This is not a reason to avoid collagen. It is a reason to tell the laboratory and the clinician ordering the test that you take it, and to ask whether to pause it beforehand. If you present to an emergency department with chest pain, mention it there too.
