Restylane®

Dermal fillers are being used often these days for a variety of cosmetic reasons. In particular, its applications are primarily aimed toward smoothing out wrinkles on the face and reducing fine lines, providing for younger, healthier looking skin. It is also a useful lip filler.

In this article, we take a look at Restylane in a bit more detail.

What is Restylane?

Restylane is the trade name for the dermal filler manufactured by the company Q-Med.

It consists of non-animal based hyaluronic acid, which is a natural component of skin. Restylane filler was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2003 to be injected into the skin on the face for cosmetic reasons.

It is available as a clear gel that is injected using a fine needle.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of a number of different tissues in the body. Its structure is so designed that its presence in tissues in fact contributes to its tightness and firmness.

It is this property that makes it an excellent dermal filler as it improves the tone of the skin and smoothes out fine lines and wrinkles.

Onset of action

The effects of Restylane injections are often seen immediately, though in most cases it can take a week or so to show any benefits.

By injecting Restylane under the skin, the hyaluronic acid binds to and holds on to water, which plumps up the skin and the lips.

Duration of action

On an average, a single session of Restylane treatment will last for up to 6 months.

If patients notice changes back to the previous state, then further injections will be required to maintain the cosmetic appearance previously achieved.

Downtime following treatment

Downtime following Restylane injection treatment is usually due to the development of side effects.

The common side effects include bruising at the site of infection, mild redness and occasionally a bit of bleeding.

This is commoner if patients are on blood thinning medication such as Aspirin, and it is recommended that these treatments are stopped prior to the injection being administered.

These effects can take a few days to resolve, so it is advised not to receive Restylane injections just before a social gathering or important event.

Competitors

The competitors to Restylane that are available on the market are Perlane, Belotero and Juvederm.

Restylane and Perlane seem to be the preferred treatments. Restylane bears the advantage of remaining localised to the site where it needs to exert its effects rather than it migrating to other nearby areas under the skin.

Furthermore, the microscopic structure between these products is different.

The costs of treatment are comparable depending on who administers the treatment and where it is administered. They can vary between $500 to $700 per injection.

Conclusion

Restylane injections are an advanced treatment available in the world of cosmetic enhancement.

It is safe and effective and offers excellent results when performed by experts.

Advanced training is available as part of our Certified Aesthetic Provider™ (CAP) Program.
